During the war, the United States Army requested that Roberts lease the Grand Hotel to the United States Army Air Corps for use as a Navy training command center and to prepare the military, who would repair aircraft, for life at sea. The huts and rooms were converted into barracks.
After the war, Roberts continued to improve and expand the site, adding a marina, two tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, the Lakewood Club, and a pool. In 1955, he sold the site to a large company, which in turn sold it to North Carolina businessman Malcolm McLean, who sold it to his brother James McLean. McLean re-expanded the hotel and added ten luxury cabins and a conference center. It also added a nine-hole course to the golf complex.

In 1986, the old Gunnison House was demolished to make way for the Grand Conference Center and nine additional golf holes were added for a total of 36 holes. More than 300 Confederate soldiers died at the Grand Hotel and were buried shoulder to shoulder in mass graves at Confederate Rest, a cemetery on the tourist property near what is now Azalea Golf Course. The Lakewood Club is a 36-hole golf resort affiliated with the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa just south of Fairhope in Baldwin County. It was also ninth site to open its doors on The Trail.
